Four SIAC Standouts Receive All-Region Baseball Honors

ATLANTA—The 2012 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlins All-South Region Baseball Team as well as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-South Region Baseball Team were recently announced with four players from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference receiving honors on one or both teams.

2012 SIAC Player of the Year Jarius Brown made the ACBA All-South Region First Team while also being named honorable mention on the NCBWA all-region team. Brown, a native of Atlanta, GA, ranks second in the SIAC with 78 hits, 62 runs batted in, 57 runs scored and seven home runs. The 6-foot-2 first baseman also ranks third in the conference with a .404 batting average while also finishing seventh with a .570 slugging percentage and fifth with a .489 on-base percentage.  
 
Brown’s teammate Dion Bryant also made the ABCA first team with a .357 batting average and a .432 slugging percentage. Bryant, a native of Blakely, GA, led the SIAC with 61 runs and ranks third with 76 hits, including one home run with 38 runs batted in. The 6-foot outfielder also ranks third with 36 stolen bases.
                                                                                                 
Benedict College first baseman David Weber and Stillman College third baseman Paul Winterbottom received second team honors from both the ABCA and NCBWA.
 
Weber, a junior first baseman playing his first season for the Tigers, hit .446 at the plate. His batting average ranks sixth in NCAA Division II. The Lawndale, CA native had 52 RBIs in 35 games, for an  NCAA-best 1.49 RBIs per game. He also ranked fourth in the country with a .824 slugging percentage and third in on-base percentage of .567. He was named first-team All-SIAC.

Winterbottom is second in the SIAC with a .422 batting average and third with a .620 slugging percentage. The Calera, AL native led the SIAC with 79 hits while also hitting three home runs with 49 runs batted in, which ranked fourth in the SIAC. The 6-foot-1 third baseman also scored 49 runs, which ranked fifth in the SIAC, along with seven triples and 14 doubles, which ranked first and third respectively.

The ABCA/Rawlings all-region and gold glove awards are voted for by regional head coaches.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport.
