Ozark, AL—The 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Championship continued on Saturday, April 28th at historic Eagle Stadium in Ozark, AL. Here is a recap from the action on day three.
#2W Miles College def. #3W Kentucky State University, 10-2
Kentucky State University battled Miles College for the fourth time this year in the elimination round of the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
The Golden Bears scored first after Justin Langdale singled through the left side, then Kelend Smith doubled through the right side to score Langdale. After Justin Bartley reached on a Breds’ throwing error, a wild pitch advanced him to third and scored Smith. Miles would add two more runs in the bottom of the second inning after a few singles that scored Courtney Kelley and Mason Davis, giving Miles a 4-0 lead.
KSU would score its first run in the top of the third inning as Ben Schroeder singled down the left field line to score Bryan Berry. In the bottom of the third, Miles added another two runs in the fourth and then one more run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.
The score remained 9-1 until the top of the eighth. A fielding error led Schroeder to get on base and advance to second. Mike Swayne then hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Schroeder advanced to third. Raphael Amey then singled through the left side to score Schroeder, bringing the score to 2-9.
In the bottom of the eighth, Miles’ Joshua Grooms tripled to left field with one out. Kevin Harris, pinch hitting for Tamile Sims, struck out swinging, but Howard dropped the ball. Howard threw out Harris at first, but Harris was able to score on the throw, giving the Golden Bears a 10-2 lead.
KSU batted again in the top of the ninth inning, but they were unable to score, giving Miles the 10-2 victory.
Miles’ Smith recorded with two RBIs and two runs scored while Langdale recorded two hits with two RBIs and Joshua Grooms had two hits with one RBI and one run.
Golden Bear pitcher Jeffrey Jones pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, giving up just six hits with one walk.
Berry ended with two hits and scored one run, while Amey and Schroeder accounted for both of KSU’s RBIs. KSU had a total of 10 hits. Arefes Everett pitched three innings, giving up seven runs and seven hits. Jamaal Duncan pitched five innings and gave up three runs on five hits.
Miles advances to play the winner of Paine/Claflin in another elimination game on Saturday at 6 p.m.
#2E Paine College def. #1E Claflin University, 7-5
Paine College defeated division foe Claflin University, 7-5, in the second game of day three at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship at Eagle Stadium in Ozark, AL, eliminating the Panthers from this year’s tournament.
Paine got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the first, including a sac fly William Van Winkle and an RBI single by Tyler Padgett, to take a 2-0 lead. Claflin would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first which included a sac fly by Julius McDougal to tie the game at 2.
Both teams would add a run in the second inning with Paine scoring on a fielding error while Claflin tied it up on a sac fly by Brett Bullard.
Runs batted in by Padgett (fielder’s choice) and Avery Wilson (single) in the top of the fifth gave Paine a 5-3 lead.
The Lions would add two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Zachary Drummond. Claflin would add two runs in the bottom of the ninth but it wouldn’t be enough as Paine would hold on for the win.
Padgett led the Lions with three hits and two RBIs while teammate Drummond would record two hits with two runs batted in. Lions pitcher Patrick Lillis went the distance while giving up no earned runs and seven hits to secure the win.
Seven different Claflin players would record a hit with Bullard, McDougal, and Travis Griffin each driving in runs.
Paine College advances to play Miles in an elimination game at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
#1W Stillman College def. #3E Albany State University, 14-3
In a battle of the remaining unbeaten teams, Stillman College defeated Albany State University, 14-3, in the winner’s bracket of the 2012 SIAC Baseball Championship at Eagle Stadium in Ozark, AL.
Albany State got on the board first with lead-off man Eddie Mathis scored on a passed ball after stealing second and third base in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the second inning, Stillman would respond in a huge way with 10 runs on seven hits, including a two-run double by Dion Bryant, to take a 10-1 lead.
Albany State would score two runs in the top of the third on a two-run single by Rickey Harris. Stillman would add four more runs in the top of the fourth inning, including two-run double from Bryant, to score the final runs of the game.
Bryant went 3-for-5 with a game-high four RBIs while Jarius Brown, Paul Winterbottom, and Chris Ambrosio each recorded two hits with a combined four runs and four RBIs for the Tigers. Stillman pitcher Taylor Gregory went two and two-third innings with four strikeouts while Tyler Vails threw six strikeouts in four and a third innings.
Stillman College will play in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
#2E Paine College def. #2W Miles College, 5-3
Paine College defeats Miles College, 5-3, in an elimination game of the 2012 SIAC Baseball Championship at Eagle Stadium in Ozark, AL.
The Lions got a pair of hits from Jonathan Richey, Darryl Wilson, and Darren Stokes with Michael Cole Thames contributing two RBIs. Paine scored two runs in the second and eighth to hold off Miles, who scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth when trailing 5-1.
Paine advances to play Albany State at 10 a.m. on Sunday for the right to play Stillman College in the championship game at 1 p.m.
