2012 SIAC Baseball Championship: Day 2 Recap

Ozark, AL—The 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Championship continued on Friday, April 27th at historic Eagle Stadium in Ozark, AL. Here is a recap from the action on day two.

#2W Miles College def. #4W Tuskegee University, 9-8
 
In the first game of day two, Miles College defeated Tuskegee University, 9-8, at historic Eagle Stadium, eliminating the Golden Tigers from the SIAC Baseball Tournament.  
 
The Golden Bears scored the first two runs of the game on fielding errors by Tuskegee in both the first and third innings. Tuskegee would respond with three runs in the bottom of the third, including a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Williams as well as two runs walked in by the Golden Bears, to take a 3-2 lead.
 
The Golden Tigers would added another run in the bottom of the fourth but Miles would score six runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-4 lead, including a three-run double by Brett Nelson followed by a two-run home run by Justin Bartley later in the inning.
 
Tuskegee scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 8. In the top of the ninth inning, Miles would score the deciding run when Brett Nelson was walked with the bases loaded.
 
Nelson and Bartlety combined for a home run and seven RBIs for the Golden Bears while Justin Langdale went 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
 
Cash Oliver led Tuskegee with three hits while Jeremy Williams and Cameron Duncan both drove in two runs.
 
Miles College advances in the loser’s bracket and will play Kentucky State on Saturday at 9 a.m.
 
#2E Paine College def. #4E Benedict College, 15-5
 
Five Benedict College pitchers combined to walk 11 batters, and the Tigers committed six errors as the Paine College Lions eliminated the Tigers 15-5 in seven innings in the 2012 SIAC Baseball Championship on Friday at Eagle Stadium.

Paine stays alive in the tournament and will face Claflin at noon on Saturday.

The Lions were leading 6-3 heading into the fourth inning, when they erupted for eight runs on just two hits. Jonathan Richey was hit by Luis Cotto who relieved starter in the third inning. Richey stole second and advanced to third when the pickoff throw to second base sailed into center field. Darryl Wilson walked and William Gorman grounded out to score Richey. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and the Tigers brought in Christopher Lail to pitch. A three-base throwing error by Robert Jones scored three runs for the Lions. The Lions scored four more runs, including another run off an error, before the inning was over with a 14-3 lead.

Benedict was able to score a single run in the fourth and fifth innings, but Paine added a run in the top of the seventh to push the lead back to 10 runs and close the game out early.

The Tigers got an RBI bunt single by Elisha McDaniel in the third inning, David Weber brought home a run on a groundout and Lydell Moseby ripped a single into left field to score McDaniel. Robert Jones singled in the fourth and later came home on a groundout by Kevin Davis. Weber had a triple in the fifth inning to score Michael Jordan.

Tyler Padgett had five RBIs to lead Paine. Darren Stokes had three of Paine's 10 hits. The Tigers out-hit Paine 13-10.
 
#3E Albany State University def. #1E Claflin University, 9-2
 
Five Golden Ram batters recorded two hits apiece as Albany State University upset the top seed in the east Claflin University, 9-2, in the SIAC Baseball Championship at Eagle Stadium.
 
Albany State scored three runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Allen Hardy and a two-run double by Stephen Lightfoot. Brett Bullard would put Claflin on the board in the bottom of the first on a passed ball.
 
Eddie Mathis drove in a run and scored another in the top of the second followed by an RBI double by Hardy later in the inning to give Albany State a 6-1 lead after two.
 
After four scoreless innings, both teams would one run in the seventh with Albany State scoring first on an RBI double to left field by Theodore Tramontana and Claflin answering with an RBI single to right field from Bullard.
 
The Golden Rams would add two runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Rickey Harris to score Jacob Campbell and a sac fly from Hardy, his third RBI on the game.
 
Mathis, Campbell, Hardy, Harris, and William Smalls combined for 10 hits, two hits each, and eight runs for Albany State.
 
Golden Ram pitcher Demonzio Stubbs pitched a complete game, giving up just six hits and two runs against the Panthers, to secure the win.
 
Albany State advances in the winner’s bracket and will face the winner of Kentucky State and Stillman at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
 
#1W Stillman College def. #3W Kentucky State University, 9-3
 
Kentucky State took on division rival Stillman College tonight in the second round of the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
 
Stillman scored the first run of the game on a single through the left side by Trent Posey to score Landon Wilson. The Breds held Stillman scoreless until the fifth inning with sound, error-free defense, but in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers exploded for five runs on five hits and one error to take a 6-1 lead.
 
KSU would not go quietly. In the top of the seventh inning, Marshall Howard singled up the middle with one out. After Ben Tabb struck out, Bryan Berry singled down the right field line, advancing Howard to third. Andrew Ramsey drove batted in Berry and Howard on a deep triple to left center and then scored himself on a single up the middle by Ben Schroeder (KSU down 3-6).
 
Stillman answered in the bottom of the seventh scoring one run on two hits and then two runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-3 win over the Breds.
 
Stillman will face Albany State in the winner’s bracket on Saturday April 28th at 3 p.m. while Kentucky State will play Miles College at 9 a.m. in an elimination game. The winner of KSU-MC will play the winner of the Claflin-Paine game (12 p.m.) at 6 p.m.
