ATLANTA-- The 2011 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-American team was recently announced and six football standouts representing the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference were selected from the 25 players named to the Don Hansen All-Super Region Two team earlier this month. The list also included four honorable mentions from the conference.
Morehouse College junior running back David Carter was named to the second team offense. In a 49-12 win over Fort Valley State University, the Marietta, GA native rushed for 251 yards in the first half, setting a NCAA D-II record for most yards in a half. His 351 rushing yards in a single game and 1,495 for the season hold a Morehouse record. With 114 points this season, he ranked fourth in Division II in scoring and rushing. He was also named to the American Football Coaches Association All-American team in December. In 2011, Carter was the SIAC Offensive Player of the Week four times and was named the SIAC Player of the Year. He earned the D2football.com National Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Fort Valley State.
Morehouse College cornerback Justin Oliver was named to the second team defense. The senior from Pennsauken, NJ led the team with five interceptions for 46 yards and 11 passes defended. He recorded 44 total tackles, including 36 solo.
Clark Atlanta senior defensive end Darel Strong was named to the third team defense. Anchoring the no. 12 defense in the nation, the Ft. Lauderdale, FL native finished the season with a team-leading six sacks and finished second in the SIAC with 17.5 tackles for loss, finishing among the top 20 in Division II in this category.
Also on the third team defense were Stillman College defensive tackle Jeremy Hall, Albany State University safety Rashad McRae, and Fort Valley State punter Marquette King.
Hall, a native of Montgomery, AL, finished with 48 tackles, including 17.5 tackles for loss, while McRae, a native of Douglas, GA, led the SIAC with 14 pass breakups, including five interceptions, and finished with 85 total tackles. With 60 punts for 2,582 yards, King led the SIAC with a 43.0 yard punting average, which ranked fifth in Division II.
Players receiving honorable mention honors include Albany State linebacker Jamarkus Gaskins, Fort Valley State linebacker Courtney Daniels, Kentucky State wide receiver Raphael Amey, and Lane defensive lineman Kyle Hurt.
From Brookfield, Ill., Don Hansen is known as an advocate and expert of small college football. He died in August of 2010 and had published the Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for 30 years starting in 1987. The next year in 1988 the Don Hansen football committee started naming All-Americans from D-II conferences.
Of 152 D-II schools, 84 have been given Don Hansen All-American honors.
