FRANKFORT, Ky. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced its 2010 Division II Degree Completion Award recipients, and Kentucky State Thorobrette Latrice Watkins was awarded a $6,000 scholarship to continue her education. Watkins, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, played basketball at KSU for four years and was also a team captain. Majoring in elementary education, Watkins maintained a 3.926 GPA.

The purpose of the Division II Degree-Completion Award program is to provide financial assistance to deserving student-athletes with completion of a first baccalaureate degree. Candidates are be students who have exhausted their athletic eligibility and have received athletics financial aid.

When asked about receiving the scholarship, Watkins stated, “This is such a blessing. I can have my education paid for even though I’ve exhausted my eligibility. I want to thank the NCAA for selecting me and Kentucky State’s Department of Athletics and fans for their support.”

The selection process for the national award emphasizes the academic performance of the student-athlete. Other factors considered are financial circumstances, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.

“Ms. Watkins truly personifies ‘student-athlete’,” said Director of Athletics, Dr. Denisha Hendricks. “We are very proud to have her as a member of the Thorobred family.”
