Lane College

Lane College is a private, four-year, co-educational Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) church-related institution, offering a liberal arts curriculum leading to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. The history of the college from its founding to its successful alumni is one of the best illustrations of overcoming obstacles to becoming the best that one can be.

Founded in 1882 by the fourth CME Bishop, Isaac Lane – a former slave and son of his owner as C.M.E. High School, the college is a charter member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and is one of very few educational institutions in the country to have been founded by blacks and to continue to be led by African Americans. The past 123 years have brought developments and name changes, but the motto, “esse non videri” – to be, not to seem, and the spirit of “The Power of Potential,” remain steadfast.

Many of Lane’s enrollees are first generation students, and the college is committed to helping them develop the skills necessary to realize their potential for success in the business world and to teach them the values of community citizenship. Lane has strong ties to the CME church and is focused on development of the whole student educating the mind and enriching the spiritual, social, and ethical aspects of each student.

While many colleges cite their national rankings, few can compare to Lane’s. In the June 2004 edition of Consumers Digest, Lane was ranked the third highest “Best Value” private college - among all colleges and universities in the nation. U.S. News and World Report ranked Lane number two in the nation in graduation rates. The Princeton Review selected Lane as one of the “Best Colleges in the Southeastern Region.” Lane leads all schools in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with its student-athlete graduation rate and is in the top 10% of all NCAA Division II schools. USA Today awarded Lane the NCAA Top Ten Division II Academic Achievement Award. The award is in recognition of the highest student-athlete graduation rate. Most recently, in the September 2005 issue of EBONY magazine that is on newsstands now, Lane is prominently featured as the fastest-growing college or university in the State of Tennessee.

Lane College offers a balance liberal education, and seeks to continue adding to the variety of its curricular offerings in order to become even more innovative in organization and methodology, and to continue to develop the mature, educated individuals needed in an ever-changing society.
